Kenya: Mob Lynches Man Who Slaughtered His Children in Nyamira

A shocked villager reacts after viewing the bodies of two children killed by their father in Bobondo.
A man in Nyamira County went berserk on Thursday evening, slaughtering his two children before an angry mob lynched him in return.
The incident, which occurred in Bobondo, West Mugirango constituency, left many baffled.
Bugesi Okero, 25, is said to have separated from his wife Rebecca six months ago and had been living alone with the children, a daughter, 5, and son, 3.
"I got a call from a neighbour that all was not well at home. On reaching our village, I found the children's father trying to run away. He was, however, overpowered by angry villagers, who killed him and set his body ablaze," Richard Tai, the lynched man's brother, told Nation.co.ke.
He said his brother had been behaving strangely in recent days, adding that he had demolished their late parents' houses in unclear circumstances.
"We have been trying to reconcile him with his runaway wife in vain. We don't know why he chased her away," added Mr Tai.
Nyamira South OCPD Riko Ngare, who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, expressed his shock but urged members of the public not to take the law into their own hands.
Police took the bodies to the Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

Kenya: Former President Kibaki Flown to South Africa for Treatment

Former president Mwai Kibaki.
Nairobi — Kenya's former President Mwai Kibaki has been flown to South Africa for treatment.
Kibaki left for South Africa Sunday morning.
"He was accompanied by his doctor. We expect him to return soon, and Kenyans will be informed of his progress as appropriate," a statement issued by State House said.
"We ask Kenyans to pray for him, and to respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time," the statement added.
It's understood that the former President was first taken to the Karen Hospital for treatment on Saturday before a decision was taken to fly him to South Africa.
The former President formally started work as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Special Envoy for Water in Africa in June.
The former President expressed hope that the initiative will ensure proper water governance processes in Africa.
He noted that progress in the sector will unlock Africa's potential for faster job-creation, poverty eradication, and socio-economic growth and development.
His role among other goals includes drawing attention of Heads of State of governments and civil societies to the importance of sustainable management of the available water resources.

Indian Minister Mocked Over 'Human Chair' Flood Photo

Shivraj Singh Chouhan visits flood affected areas

"Embarrassing" politician is pictured being lifted above shallow water following flooding which has claimed more than 40 lives.

A senior Indian politician has been ridiculed over images which show him being carried through ankle-deep water while inspecting deadly flooding.
At least 40 people have died and hundreds of thousands have been evacuated as floods triggered by monsoon rains hit central and eastern India.
During a visit to a village hit by flooding, Shivraj Singh Chouhan was pictured wearing white trousers and being held aloft by two policemen in shallow water.
The photo of Mr Chouhan, chief minister of the Madhya Pradesh state, was splashed on newspaper front pages in India and sparked a backlash on Twitter.
One post read: "Shame on Shivraj Singh Chouhan. So embarrassing, wet your feet my man."
Another user joked that the picture showed Mr Chouhan "celebrating with coaches and staff after defeating (Michael) Phelps to clinch gold in 400m swimming."
Others accused the minister of abusing his position, while some drew comparisons to the treatment of British officials during colonial times.
The Hindustan Times reports that security officers lifted Mr Chouhan after he "hit a hard object in the mud".
Other reports suggest that the minister was hoisted over concerns about snakes in the water.
On Twitter Mr Chouhan posted pictures of himself surveying flood damage in barefoot, next to a man holding his shoes.
He omitted the image of him being carried through floodwater.
In Madhya Pradesh at least 17 people have died from drowning, electrocution and injuries from house collapses.
Mr Chouhan said: "The administration is alert and I have ordered them to provide food and clean water to the displaced.
"Weather warning administration will take adequate steps when needed."
Disaster management officials said that days of heavy rain have caused the Ganges River to rise above the danger mark in 20 districts.
Floods occur in many parts of India during the monsoon season, which runs from June through September.

Elected leaders and those aspiring for political seats should not be given party positions in the new Jubilee Party, Kieni MP Kanini Kega has said.
According to Mr Kega, the party leadership should be left to those who are not eyeing political seats and are "independent thinkers".
The MP dismissed claims that he was positioning himself to take up a party position.
“I would not wish to be a party leader because the party will demand my attention and deny me enough time to carry out my campaigns,” he said.
The MP accused leaders and aspirants for elective positions of fighting the [Jubilee] merger that seeks to unite Kenyans.
According to the MP, elected leaders would influence their nominations and this would result in battles in the Jubilee Party before its official launch in September.
“Let us not waste time thinking that someone will watch as they lose a nomination yet they are holding positions in the party.
"Of course they will do everything in their power to win,” he said.
He further supported the involvement of the electoral commission in party nominations.
This decision, he said, was a clear indication that the party has confidence in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
Leaders of The National Alliance, United Republican Party, Alliance Party of Kenya and the New Ford-Kenya are jostling for the top party positions.
The party’s constitution provides for 21 top posts, including that of the leader, reserved for President Kenyatta, and deputy party leader, set aside for Mr Ruto.
Three deputy chairpersons will be in charge of operations, programmes and strategy, while the secretary-general will also have three deputies for operations, programmes and strategy, among other functions.
The President and his deputy are expected to appoint interim officials.
